Afi: American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United States: Feature Films 1941-1950 Indexes (American Film Institute Catalog of Motion Pictures Produced in the United sTates)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (June, 1999)
Authors: Patricia King Hanson, Amy Dunkleberger, and Bill Ivey
Average review score:

Incomparable!
The latest catalog from the folks at the American Film Institute is, almost needless to say, their best yet. Like the two previous catalogs -- 1911-1920, 1931-1940 -- this amazing work covering all American-made feature films of the decade is heavily annotated and a MUST for any researcher. Only one decidedly minor problem, however; the volumes have become almost too large and the Film Institute ought to consider publishing their next decade in four books.

AIA Detroit: The American Institute of Architects Guide to Detroit Architecture
Published in Paperback by Wayne State Univ Pr (November, 2002)
Author: John Gallagher
Average review score:

The definitive guide to Detroit Architecture
Thoroughly researched, this book is a must have. Patterned after the W. Hawkins Ferry book I had decades ago as a student, this book updates and adds significant content about the rich architectural history of Detroit.
The writeups are informative from both a building and historical context. I loved the descriptions, such as from the Guardian Building (my favorite), "a lightning bolt of spirited inventiveness".
Take this book with you as you stroll downtown and you'll find new treasures, like the Water Department building.

Excellent!

AIDS and Men: Taking Risks or Taking Responsibility?

Touching on the sensitive issue
A reader from Mozambique. AIDS and MEN: Taking risk or Taking responsibility?

This book touches on a sensitive issue. Although the argument of men driving the HIV epidemic is not new, it has not been realised by many sectors of society. Firstly, the book points out the role of men in the spread of HIV. Men are labelled as key actors in the dynamic transmission of the disease. Men have greater opportunity of sexual contact, drug and alcohol use and take advantage over women by determining when a condom will be used. This behaviour of men subjects women to greater risk of acquiring HIV. Secondly and closely related to the former, is that HIV/AIDS in women is not merely a biological fact of contracting a disease. Rather, HIV/AIDS in women is, in the majority of cases, a result of the disadvantage they have in comparison with men. Women are dominated by men. The condition of dependency, taboos, lack of opportunity, ignorance, religion and others, make women unable to protect themselves to avoid the disease. HIV/AIDS in women is as result of women abuse and violence, mostly in developing countries. Thirdly, the social approach which is presented as one of the most likely to overcome the epidemic, is at the same time, recognised as the hardest to achieve. The social approach addresses the issue of "changing societal norms which means to recognise the context of men's life, taking into account their fears and desires and encouraging responsibility, communication with partners and respect for others and oneself". As a physician and public health worker, but mostly as a man, we must recognise that if we(men) are taking risks, we have to change our behaviour by taking responsibility. In this context the book has achieved its proposal.

Great book about interesting region
My grandparents were Danish settlers in the area of Fort McMurray Alberta. I grew up in the same area, and even though I live in Wisconsin now, the region is a fascinating combination of resources, colorful personalities and changing economic times. As this book shows, a railway or a refinery can change an area forever. It has helped me to understand my origins. Recommended.

The Alpha Book on Cancer and Living
Published in Paperback by Alpha Inst (October, 1993)
Authors: Alpha Books, Brent G. Ryder, and Alpha Institute
Average review score:

I recommend this book a lot!
In a thoughful, direct way, Brent Ryder's book addressess many of the important issues facing cancer patients, family, and friends from the time of diagnosis through long-term survivorship. The chapters cover everything from a detailed explanation of what cancer is, treatment options, and advocacy advice, with recommended reading and resources. I especially liked the section on how to support a patient as a family member or friend, and the chapter that deals with legal, financial and insurance issues facing cancer survivors - this kind of information is not easy to find in one place. If someone can only afford one book, this would be the one I'd recommend.
